These green tree pythons are native to the central dividing range of New Guinea. Animals from the highland localities vary considerably in color and pattern. Highland animals are most commonly associated with the black freckling that some specimens exhibit. In fact some highland viridis can display large amounts of blue and white coloration as well as the characteristic black while other specimens may be solid green. The red phase neonates from this region are unusually dark with fairly consistent white markings. We are working with a group of these animals who are descendants of animals collected near Wamena. We maintain only pure locality specimens of Morelia viridis and our goal is to preserve these distinct populations in herpetoculture.
