Inland Reptile

Description

Liasis savuensis is a relatively new species, first discovered in 1993. This is a small species growing to lengths of just 3-5ft. Savu pythons have a medium build relative to the short length. Like all members of its genus the head is only slightly wider than the neck.
These pythons undergo one of the most dramatic ontogenetic color changes of any python. Hatchlings emerge from the egg a pale orange color. As these animals mature gray and black scales begin to dominate, giving the snakes a pixilated appearance. Adults eventually become nearly black. Another striking and unique feature of this taxon is its white eyes. Savu pythons are primarily terrestrial in the wild.

Habitat

The Island of Sawu is nearly flat and vegetation is generally low. Liasis savuensis inhabit open areas and can be found sheltering under rocks and shrubs. This species can also be found in human modified habitats and agricultural areas.

Distribution

This species is endemic to the small island of Sawu. Liasis savuensis has one of the smallest geographic distributions of any python taxa. The entire island of Sawu is only 23 miles long and 10 miles wide.

Projects
